For some reasons that I’m not even sure of, I think the family two blocks away are going through a really hard time. How I know? Why else would any Nigerian family do early morning family prayers with the kind of diligence these ones have? It is either some evil spirits have come to visit or money don pack hin load go.

Forgive me, but Nigerians pride themselves in being very busy only with the things that matter. Who can blame them? When you live in a country like this, you are occupied with everything else but personal development or spiritual growth. Why should we when there’s the source of the next meal to worry about, health challenges, accommodation and the likes. No, no time to look Ushe face.

So when you notice a conscious effort like the vibe I’m getting from the family two blocks away, just know say water don pass garri or agbada don hook for barb wire. The culture of family time or family prayers is not something we value as such but that does not mean we no dey pray. See, we are a bonafide praying nation. We pray about, for and on anything. The insecurities we have make us susceptible to fears and these unfounded fears leave us praying even against a cockroach jejely passing by.

So back to the crux of the matter. My mother’s illness has taken us to different places and has forced us to be part of ridiculous congregations. So we have seen things, heard things and have done things. We have been made to believe the silliest things, adhere to weird principles and hold onto falsehood. But…
